We must not miss that it is on that very day (not a seven year period and not one thousand years) on that very day that the heavens will disappear. For the rest of us, we can hear the music building and the excitement of the people and the anticipation from the servants. Here we discover that in (or on) the Day of the Lord, which comes like a thief, the heavens will pass away and the earth will be destroyed by fire. Jesus’ return will be a surprise only to those who aren’t anticipating it. “ but you brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief” (1 Thess 5:4). It’s not just, “Surprise, we’re here!” For those anticipating him, it is not unexpected. There is gradual anticipation as all those expecting him feel it in the air, see the bustle of readiness happening, and then that moment when bride and groom see each other face to face. Grooms do not show up to a wedding suddenly unannounced. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober. 3When people are saying, Peace and security, then sudden. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 2For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief at night. You are all children of the light and children of the day. Jesus comes only as a thief in the night… to those who aren’t expecting him. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. Yes, the Scriptures say that this is how he will come this way (1 Thess 5:2).

Ye are all the children of light, and the children of the day: we are not of the night, nor of darkness. Peter also used the image of a thief, but perhaps out of. Behold, I am coming like a thief Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed (Rev 16:15). But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you (Rev 3:3). It is thought that when Jesus returns it will be as a thief in the night. For yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so cometh as a thief in the night.

I will come like a thief in the night
